The following regulations are in force to promote the harmonious and efficient running of the Laboratory for the benefit of all users. Failure to comply with these rules will result in the automatic closure of your account and the loss of access to the laboratory.

WARNING: A  ZERO TOLERANCE  policy is now in effect!

Regulations by Section

1. General Rules

1.1 Only authorised personel may enter the Laboratory. Users are not permitted to "invite" colegues.
1.2 A letter of authorisation is required by all users to access the Lab during weekends and holidays. Only postgraduate students may borrow the lab key for out of hours access.
1.3 Your account and access card is for personal use only. Under no circumstances should either of these be "lent" to other people.

1.5 Do not interfere with the configuration of computer equipment or the network without approval from the Lab Supervisors.
1.6 Under no circumstances is equipment to be moved around within, or removed from, the Laboratory without prior approval from the Lab Supervisor. This also means that you may not rearrange the furniture, nor move chairs between rooms.
1.7 All laboratory users should read the Lab bulletin board regularly (i.e. the white board on the wall, on the right hand side just as you enter the lab) and the Lab News page frequently. These publicise news and relevant information regarding the current status of the Laboratory.

2. Educated Behaviour

2.1 When accessing the internet, i.e. accessing web pages or sending mail (especially to newsgroups) etc please abide by conventional "netiquette".
2.2 For the convenience of all users, keep the noise level down.
2.3 Return all reference books and manual to the reference shelf.
2.4 Please keep the laboratory clean. The "Rascunho" boxes are for white paper that has atleast one blank side. Please dispose of other litter appropriately.
2.5 Make sure that there is still paper in the printer after printing your documents. If there is none, please ask the secretary for some more, do not be lazy and simply take paper out of another printer.

3. Using Workstations

3.1 Do NOT switch on or off computers (nor printers). When you have finished your session and no one is waiting to use the machine, turn off the monitor only.
3.2 Do NOT (x)lock a machines unnecessarily. If you need to run a program, run it in background. Users who leave their machines locked during peak usage hours or during periods of high demand will be logged off.
3.3 The Laboratory is predominantly a unix working environment. Lab PCs running the Windows(tm) OS are provided solely for the purpose of working with, or printing, Windows- and Office(tm)-specific documents (with the exception previously approved Windows-based projects and classwork).
3.4 Lab top computers may be used on the system network if prior approval has been obtained from the Lab supervisors. In this case you will be assigned a new internal IP for use within the Laboratory. Please see the Lab Help page for more details.

4. Using the Printers

4.1 Only documents related to the Post-graduate Course may be printed such as course work, technical papers and reports, dissertations (including drafts). The printing of personal documents and complete program listings is forbidden.

Amended Restriction (23rd November 2001):

SÓ PODERÃO SER IMPRESSOS:
  • Relatórios e Trabalhos destinados a orientadores;
  • Artigos a serem lidos relacionados com o Mestrado ou IC;
  • Versões das dissertações.

NÃO SERÁ PERMITIDO:
  • A impressão de informações particulares ou qualquer outra coisa não relacionada com o curso.
4.2 Both paper and toner are limited resources. Please control the number (and size) of the documents you print. For example, do not print the header page.

5. Software Installation

>
5.1 Under no circumstances should any software be installed without the approval of the Laboratory supervisors.
5.2 Students requiring software must acquire written approval from their supervisor, and provide the following information: a description of the software; who intends to utilise the software; for how long will the software be used; who will be assigned the task of supporting the software (could be suporte@ic.uff.br); from where the software was/will be obtained; and any other pertinent information.

6. User Accounts

6.1 With the exception of professors, all users must register for a lab account. Accounts and access cards are only valid for a fixed period of time after which they will automatically be closed and invalidated, respectively. Users should re-register before this period expires in order to maintain access to the laboratory. Take note (especially Supervisors): the contents of a user's account will automatically be deleted three months after its closure.
6.2 Your account belongs to the Instituto de Computação (UFF). It is provided solely for course work related use. Inappropriate use of any accounts will be dealt with by disciplinary action. Remember all accesses are logged.
6.3 Disk space is a shared and limited resource. Please delete unrequired or unnecessary files, compress large files, and read your mail regularly (i.e. transfer your messages from the mail server to your own account). Failure to do this could result in your files or your mail being deleted. Although there is no fixed limit on a users filespace, excessive usage will have to be justified.
