Social Robotics Framework and Platform for Research and Development of Affective Social Robots

Abstract:

The development of affective social robots envolves various challenges related to perceiving the user’s affective state and expressing the robot’s own affective states. These capabilities require software mechanisms that must be integrated with the characteristics and capabilities of robotic platforms. This thesis investigates the development of robotic frameworks capable of incorporating affective capabilities. To this end, a modular and extensible software framework for social robot development is proposed, organized into three layers: the Robot Abstraction Layer, the Execution Layer, and the Affective Layer. The Affective Layer provides abstractions for estimating the user’s affective state, modeling and adapting the robot’s affective state, and mapping these to multimodal behavior specifications. This thesis also presents the proposal for the FRED affective social robotics platform. In addition to the FRED robot, the proposed framework was implemented on different platforms and applications, including EVA 2.0, GRACE, and FRED MX, and the reuse of the SENSEI component from the Execution Layer in the web and mobile applications EvaPlay and EVA Virtual, respectively. The Affective Layer was instantiated and integrated into the FRED robot within two affective interaction scenarios. The contributions of this thesis were evaluated through several studies, including an evaluation of FRED involving 113 participants; an assessment of user experience regarding the EvaML 2.0 scripting language and the usability of the EvaSIM 2.0 simulator during an educational hackathon; and an exploratory qualitative evaluation of the framework’s use by researchers from Switzerland and Mexico involved in the GRACE and FRED MX projects, respectively. The results provide evidence of the framework’s applicability across different social robotics projects, while the instantiation of the Affective Layer demonstrated the integrated operation of its components and the practical realization of the proposed abstractions. The evaluation of FRED revealed varying levels of understanding regarding the affective states expressed by the robot. Together, the framework, the Affective Layer, and the FRED affective social robotics platform constitute the main contributions of this thesis to development and research in Affective Human-Robot Interaction (AHRI).
